How to Hire a Virtual Assistant in India
Last updated . Every number on this page was checked October 2, 2026.
To hire a virtual assistant in India, you either bring the person on directly, as a contractor who works from India, or you go through a service that supplies the person. On cost, this site has no sourced market rate for India and names none. The one overseas figure it can state is one owner's: in his own hiring, Jeremy Kenerson has paid a full-time contractor overseas about $1,500 a month. India is 9.5 to 13.5 hours ahead of four US time zones: Eastern, Central, Mountain and Pacific. The exact gap turns on your zone and the season, and it always lands on a half hour. On language, India's Official Languages Act says English may keep being used, along with Hindi, for the official purposes of India's national government.
This page is a plain reading of the rules. It isn't legal or tax advice.
How much does it cost to hire a virtual assistant in India?
This site can't tell you what a virtual assistant in India costs, because it found no market rate it could source. The only figure it can state is one owner's. In Jeremy Kenerson's own hiring, he has paid about $1,500 a month for a full-time contractor overseas. That figure is for an overseas contractor in general. It isn't a rate for India, and it isn't a market rate.
Why is there no rate here? This site prints a market price only when two solid published sources back it, and it couldn't find two for an overseas hire. The search turned up staffing firms that sell overseas hires, and a seller's own page can't set a market price.
So price a hire in India the way you'd check any quote:
- Ask each service or candidate for the price in writing, in US dollars.
- Ask what the price covers: the hours a week, who manages the work, and who fills in when the person is out.
- Turn an hourly price into a monthly one, so you can set it next to your other options.
The math for step 3 is worked out in virtual assistant cost. The first-hire cost page has the sourced employee figures for Texas and the US, and it sets four kinds of first hire side by side, by the month.
What is the time difference with India?
India is 10.5 hours ahead of US Eastern time, 11.5 hours ahead of Central, 12.5 hours ahead of Mountain and 13.5 hours ahead of Pacific when the US is on standard time. On US daylight time, each gap shrinks by one hour.
| US time zone | India is ahead by, on US standard time | India is ahead by, on US daylight time |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern | 10.5 hours | 9.5 hours |
| Central | 11.5 hours | 10.5 hours |
| Mountain | 12.5 hours | 11.5 hours |
| Pacific | 13.5 hours | 12.5 hours |
India's clock is set 5.5 hours ahead of UTC all year, with no daylight time. US clocks go one hour ahead for daylight time between the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November.
One caution on the Mountain row: it follows the database's Denver zone. The Phoenix zone stays 7 hours behind UTC all year, with no daylight time, so its gap is 12.5 hours in every month.
For a reader in Texas, two rows matter. The federal rule puts the line between Central and Mountain time on the east line of Hudspeth County, in the far west of the state. The time zone database lists El Paso County and Hudspeth County under Mountain time and most of Texas under Central time.
The half hour matters when you book calls. A meeting at 9:00 a.m. Central standard time starts at 8:30 p.m. in India. The start of your day lines up with their evening, and your afternoon falls in the middle of their night.
The next table shows a full US work day on India's clock.
| US time zone | On US standard time | On US daylight time |
|---|---|---|
| Eastern | 7:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. | 6:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. |
| Central | 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. | 7:30 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. |
| Mountain | 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. | 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. |
| Pacific | 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. | 9:30 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. |
Write the time in both zones on every invite, so nobody shows up 30 minutes off.
Is English used for work in India?
India's Official Languages Act says English may keep being used, along with Hindi, for the official purposes of India's national government. That section covers government use. It can't tell you how any one workplace runs, or how well one person writes or speaks English.
Check that yourself:
- Ask for a writing sample on a task like the ones you'll assign
- Hold the interview on a video call
- Send one written task, and read how the person asks questions about it
If the work you'd send overseas is production work, a team is another route. DeskTeam360 runs this site, and it sells production teams for a flat monthly price.

How do US owners bring on a virtual assistant in India?
US owners bring on a virtual assistant in India in one of two ways: directly, as a contractor who works from India, or through a service that supplies and manages the person.
Whichever way you go, settle these points before work starts:
- Which tasks need you both online at once, and which don't
- The working hours, written in both time zones, half hour included
- Who moves the meeting when US clocks change in March and November. India's clock doesn't change
On pay, the IRS's rule is that pay generally comes from the place where the work is done. This isn't tax advice. Ask your accountant. For any country, and the contractor paperwork, see hire overseas workers. That page also has the steps for choosing a person, setting pay terms and getting a contract in writing.
India's own rules, such as its labor law and taxes, aren't sourced on this site.
This page is about a person who lives and works in India. For a remote employee in the US, see how to hire remote employees.
How does India compare with the Philippines for a first overseas hire?
On the clock, India sits 2.5 hours closer to US time than Manila does. This page compares the two places on time only. It has no sourced pay rate for either one.
| India | Manila | |
|---|---|---|
| Hours ahead of UTC | 5.5 | 8 |
| Ahead of US Eastern, standard time | 10.5 hours | 13 hours |
| Ahead of US Central, standard time | 11.5 hours | 14 hours |
| Ahead of US Mountain, standard time | 12.5 hours | 15 hours |
| Ahead of US Pacific, standard time | 13.5 hours | 16 hours |
| Uses daylight time | No | No |
Put as a time of day, the gap looks like this. When it's 9 a.m. Central standard time, it's 8:30 p.m. in India and 11 p.m. in Manila. A morning call in the US falls in the evening in India and late at night in Manila.
If you want to talk live during your morning, India's evening is the nearer fit. If you plan to hand off tasks at the end of your day and pick them up the next morning, both places leave a full work day in between.
For the Philippines, see hire virtual assistant philippines.
